Why online rejections sting less than cold approach rejections

By Fabrizio Rausa

When you message someone online and it goes nowhere, you forget about them almost instantly because they were never a real person to you, just an avatar on your phone. Fabrizio Rausa makes this point directly: he messaged a girl he had completely forgotten about, only to find out she had remembered him for eight months. The asymmetry is striking. Online, a failed interaction leaves almost no emotional trace. In person, getting shot down, or worse, laughed at in your face, can create something close to PTSD. That kind of psychological damage makes future approaches harder, not easier. The lesson is not to avoid facing fear altogether, but not to make it harder on yourself on purpose by skipping the lower-stakes practice first.
