Hyper-timely content extracts value fast, then falls off a cliff

By Greg Isenberg

A meme capitalizing on an Apple announcement gives you maybe 24 hours of distribution, and that's all the juice you're going to get out of it. You can't repost it a month from now, three months from now, or a year from now. In contrast, a deeply researched essay might get modest short-term traction but can be referenced and built upon for the next 10 years. The key question to ask before you create anything is: where on the spectrum am I sitting, and are my expectations aligned with what I'm actually making? You can't build something intended to be timeless and expect it to get the same immediate distribution as a reactive meme — those are fundamentally different games with different payoff curves.
