Etihad's VR film 'Reimagine' was the first 360° film starring an award-winning actor
The Etihad Airways VR project 'Reimagine', starring Nicole Kidman, was the first time an award-winning actor appeared in a 360-degree film. The production recreated a full flight from New York to Abu Dhabi, combining a heist plot with mistaken-identity comedy. To make viewers genuinely feel immersed inside a new aircraft, the team used true stereoscopic cinematic VR with robotic motion control camera rigs, stitched CGI graphics, and binaural audio. One telling technical detail: the plane had no physical ceiling, so the entire ceiling was CGI, and the sky outside was completely fake. Everything had to be built with off-the-shelf hardware and software because the production was happening simultaneously across locations as far apart as the Philippines, Poland, and São Paulo. It was described as a state-of-the-art VR project at the time.
