Writing words doesn't make your ideas original — here's why

By Greg Isenberg

There's a faulty belief that if you were the one who wrote something, you own it and created something original. But writing a sentence like 'I woke up today and made coffee' isn't original — that's just an open-source grouping of words. No one owns that. Original thinking doesn't mean you typed the words yourself. It means you've crystallized a genuinely new way of seeing the world in a specific topic over a prolonged period of time. If you're just repeating commodity ideas all day long, thinking they're yours because you were the one who wrote them, you're mistaken — those groupings of words have existed forever.
