Personality content outperforms credibility content — even at the highest levels

By Greg Isenberg

There are two layers of association when building an audience. The first is volume — writing a lot about a topic. The second, more powerful layer is personality. Consider two personal finance experts: one is highly credentialed but anonymous. The other may be less formally qualified, but the audience knows she's a single mom, went through a divorce three years ago, raised two kids while working multiple jobs, and started a blog that took off. That second person wins. And something many people forget is that 'less credible, more personality' content typically outperforms 'more credible, commodity' content. There are personal finance creators with significant personality-driven content who have larger audiences than Ray Dalio — a multi-billionaire. Credibility matters; you want to learn from someone who has actually done the thing. But credibility alone is not the winning card. The winning card is personality — how much you're willing to let your audience into your world, and how many details about you they associate with your topic.
