Contrarian take: you don't have to start super niche from day one

By Greg Isenberg

A somewhat contrarian position is that you don't necessarily have to start super niche from the beginning. You can try a marketing agency, a law firm, different industries — see what works for you, where the market pulls you — and then go super vertical. This is a design thinking principle: diverge first, then converge. Try many different things, just not for too long, because you don't want to get into a constant cycle of trying something new without ever reaching focus. But once you find the thing that clicks — whether you're resonating with an audience really well or just getting pulled into that market — go super niche, go sub-niche, and use that as your wedge to infiltrate the rest of the market.
