A single word like '2026' can destroy a piece's long-term shelf life

By Greg Isenberg

The moment you embed a time-stamp into a piece of content — 'Substack just launched this new feature' or 'Here's how to start a Substack in 2026' — you've fundamentally changed its short, medium, and long-term value. That word, that date, means you can't repost the piece in 2030. You'd have to re-record it, rewrite half of it, or cannibalize pieces of it for something new. Small language choices at the top of a video or essay determine the entire lifespan of that asset. Being intentional about whether you're making evergreen or timely content isn't just an editorial decision — it's a strategic one about how much return you'll get on your creative investment over time.
