Why vanilla orchids on remote Pacific farms must be pollinated by hand
At the farm, Lauren is shown that vanilla plants must be pollinated by hand because the local bee species cannot access the pollen. The pollen mass sits underneath a flap called the rostellum inside the flower's column, physically blocking the bees from reaching it. The farmer demonstrates opening the flower, lifting the rostellum flap to expose the female stigma, and manually pressing the pollen against it. Without this human intervention at each individual flower, the vanilla vines would produce no beans.
