Why Lauren uses a trip line and marker buoy when anchoring near coral

By Lauren Landers Sailing

When anchoring in areas with coral heads, Lauren deploys an anchor line fitted with an attached fender or marker buoy, dropping it into the water to mark the anchor's exact location. The buoy serves two purposes: it shows where the anchor is sitting so other boats can avoid it, and it helps prevent the anchor chain from wrapping around a coral head as the boat swings. In shallow, coral-rich lagoons where bommies rise close to the surface, this is a practical precaution that protects both the reef and the ground tackle.
