Recognising when a re-drop is needed after a bad anchor set near coral

By Lauren Landers Sailing

After dropping anchor near a coral head that came almost to the surface, Lauren noticed her rudder would strike it as the boat swung. The tell was that the chain was still not tight, meaning the anchor had not set properly and the boat had not yet pulled back to a secure position. That loose chain told her she needed to re-drop before the boat swung over the hazard. She notes she had not had to perform a re-drop in a very long time, which underlines how unusual but important the skill is when conditions demand it.
