Opening a coconut without a machete using a multi-tool and power drill
Lauren's machete was too old and dull to be useful, and replacements are not available in the remote Tuamotus. Her workaround is a cordless rotary cutting tool to slice through the thick fibrous husk, followed by an electric drill fitted with a large auger bit to bore an opening directly into the shell. She then drains the coconut water through a mesh sieve into a bowl. It requires less muscle than a machete and works reliably. Her plan is to source a proper machete when she returns to the States.
