How to leave a boat safely in Tahiti for an extended period
When leaving a boat unattended in Tahiti for an extended period, Lauren Landers Sailing chose to anchor at Feton Bay, a remote anchorage well south of the main town. This anchorage is unusual because you must reserve your spot, unlike most marinas. A local caretaker watches the boat for around 80 euros per month, which is dramatically cheaper than the 2,000 to 3,000 euro marina option. Importantly, the marina explicitly will not touch your boat in an emergency, so having a trusted person on call is essential regardless. The caretaker will board in a storm, move the boat if it drags, and come weekly to open hatches and ventilate the interior to help prevent mold, which Lauren notes is a serious and hard-to-control problem on boats in that climate.
