Why solo founders have a real edge in AI rollups over big funds

By Greg Isenberg

There are a few structural reasons solo founders can compete — and even win — against large funds in this space. First, the tools are the same: the models and coding agents available to you are the same ones institutional funds use. Second, and more importantly, you get to be the integration. The hardest part of any rollup is getting each new business onto the system without breaking anything. Funds have to hire managers who learn every business from scratch, while you're already in the room — you know the clients, you read the agent drafts yourself. Third, many business owners who've spent 40 years building something would simply rather hand it to a person than sell to a large venture capital firm. That preference is a real edge. And finally, these deals are too small for the big funds, so you're not even competing with the likes of General Catalyst for them.
