What is a 'harness'? The clearest explanation of LLM model vs. harness

By Greg Isenberg

A lot of people throw the word harness around and honestly don't really understand what it means. Think of the LLM model as the engine of a car — how fast it goes. The harness is everything else: the tools it can access, the workflow rules, the memory, the checks. Using the car analogy, that's the body, the steering wheel, the floor mats, the paint, the electrical — everything around the engine. So if you can take a general model and turn it into a system that deeply understands how a specific industry works — for example, an operating system for a freight brokerage agent — you're going to be able to generate a lot of value. Harnesses are the new GPT wrapper.
