What exactly is a Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE)?
A Forward Deployed Engineer is a role that bridges the gap between general AI intelligence and the specific context of a company. Every company now has access to the same foundational AI models — Claude, GPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot — so intelligence itself is no longer a competitive moat. The edge goes into deployment: where, how, and why a company uses that intelligence. An FDE's job is to take that general intelligence and apply it specifically to a particular company's processes, workflows, and business structure in a way that benefits them the most. The advantage will increasingly go to whoever has the best bridge between their own internal processes and the intelligence stack they have access to.
