VC memo parable: the knife salesman who bet everything on Google AdWords in 2003
A benchmark partner sent a wake-up call memo to portfolio companies urging them to radically rethink how they operate with AI — immediately. The memo ended with a parable: imagine two friends in roughly 2003, both selling knives door to door. One spends 30 minutes every night and weekend experimenting with Google AdWords to get supplementary leads. They grow a little revenue each month. The other person decides this internet thing is the future, stops going door to door entirely, and spends the next few months doing nothing but figuring out how to build a fully internet-based business — living off savings for two months with zero revenue while slowly mastering SEO, SEM, and e-commerce. Project forward five years: the second person has probably built one of the first multi-billion dollar e-commerce companies, while the first is still selling door to door in a shrinking market. The point is that what feels like unproductive experimentation — not bringing home the bacon right now — can actually be the most profound investment you make for real business leverage, not even in two years but potentially in six months.
