Understanding the work means sitting with the people who actually do it

By Greg Isenberg

When you're mapping out a workflow before building an AI solution, you can't just read a spec doc. It takes time and real effort to sit with the person responsible — and very often, multiple people responsible for the same process. In large organizations with 5,000 or 10,000 employees, chances are many people are touching the same workflow. Each step turns out to be far more complicated than it first appears: data gets re-keyed by hand, columns drift, files go stale, records have to be checked into internal systems. You have to uncover all of that before you can design anything intelligent on top of it.
