According to a Sequoia chart on AI agent deployment by domain, software engineering accounts for nearly 50% of all tool calls made by agents. The next largest categories are back-office automation at 9.1%, marketing and copywriting at 4.4%, sales and CRM at 4.3%, finance and accounting at 4.0%, and data analysis and BI at 3.5%. Legal and travel each sit at just 0.8%. The vast majority of industries show extremely low penetration, reflecting how early the overall market still is.
