Open-source tools have made robotics accessible without a PhD
Today there are open-source robot learning projects, cheap cameras, low-cost arms, better simulations, multimodal motor models, and community-shared datasets. Companies like Hugging Face have built LeRobot, which is essentially trying to make robot learning more accessible. Hugging Face acts like a database of all these open-source projects whose repositories you can download. There are low-cost arm projects like SO-100 and the SO-101 ecosystem, and smaller Vision-Language-Action models like SmolVLA that target robot policies you can train and run without a giant industrial facility.
