Mistral is a builder-friendly European model family, but its lineup can be confusing
Mistral is the European model family, based in France. If you care about efficient models and practical developer use cases, they're pretty good and have a strong builder-friendly posture. The downside is that the lineup is a little confusing — some models are open, some are commercial — so there are some question marks there. Microsoft also has their open model family called Phi, which is interesting if you care about smaller, faster, lower-latency models, though for a lot of use cases it hasn't been seen to work very well. New models are showing up all the time, so the landscape keeps shifting.
