How Palantir popularized the Forward Deployed Engineer role

By Greg Isenberg

The term Forward Deployed Engineer was coined and popularized by Palantir. Palantir built an ontology — a software stack with connectors to various software systems and data lakes — that allows enterprises to pipe their data into a unified interface. Their FDEs are then deployed on site, either at enterprise customers, military installations, or government agencies. Once embedded, they learn the client's workflows and build out workflows, dashboards, and agents that solve specific problems for those organizations. In essence, Palantir took what was traditionally consulting and brought it into the software space under the FDE model, and that approach is what really allowed their business to take off.
