Buying contact data from enrichment tools is legal — what you do with it determines compliance

By Greg Isenberg

Purchasing email addresses and phone numbers through tools like GitLeads, Apollo, or Origami is fully legal. These companies aggregate contact data by buying lists from data brokers, which is a legitimate practice. What changes from a compliance standpoint is how you use that data. In the United States, cold emailing is technically permitted, and you can add people to an email newsletter as long as you follow CAN-SPAM requirements — there's a checklist of things you have to do. On the spectrum of black hat to white hat marketing, buying from a data broker and cold emailing sits pretty far on the white hat side, even if the underlying data broker network is its own complex ecosystem.
