Making your girlfriend your only social outlet will destroy the relationship

By Fabrizio Rausa

One of the hidden causes of breakup pain is not love but attachment built from dependence. When your girlfriend is your primary social contact, the person you spend most of your time with and the person you talk to about everything, losing her means losing your entire support system at once. That is why it feels impossible to move on. Fabrizio Rausa draws the parallel to arguments: a woman talking to three friends while you argue is processing her emotions elsewhere and comes back calm, which seems infuriating to you. You need the same outlet. Talk to your friends, your brother, people who are not your girlfriend. Your romantic relationship should never be your main source of social connection. It is not sustainable and will likely end the relationship even when everything else seems fine.
