Why a rough offshore passage is nearly impossible to film as it happens
During a brutal upwind passage to Fakarava, Lauren Landers Sailing found it impossible to keep cameras rolling. The cockpit was completely soaked, conditions were violent, and the crew could only grab their phones occasionally to capture fragments. As Lauren put it, the footage just doesn't do justice to how bad it was. She acknowledges the irony: that's exactly when you're supposed to film, when the drama is happening. But sometimes the conditions simply make it impractical, and getting through safely has to take priority over content.
