The engine starts knocking and revving erratically 65 miles from Tahiti

By Lauren Landers Sailing

With about 60 to 65 miles to go, the engine began making strange revving sounds followed by a knocking noise. Lauren immediately noticed she had not checked the oil before leaving, acknowledging she had gotten a little too complacent. The engine eventually refused to run at all. When attempting to start it, only a click was heard rather than the starter motor engaging, suggesting the problem was electrical or mechanical rather than simply a fuel or oil issue.
