Saying goodbye to your entire buddy-boat fleet hits differently

By Lauren Landers Sailing

Goodbyes are a constant reality of the cruising life, but some hit harder than others. When the crew of Pinnacle left, it was described as one of the hardest goodbyes yet, and the feelings were still very present days later. What made it especially heavy was the realization that Pinnacle was not just one friend leaving, they were the last people from the whole buddy-boating group. Everyone else had already gone. Watching people who have become some of your best friends sail away, with no clear sense of when or whether you will ever see them again, is genuinely painful. The healthy response, rather than burying it in boat work, is to sit with those emotions and feel them.
