How Lauren Landers Sailing manages sailing with a cat, including overboard risk

By Lauren Landers Sailing

Mo, the cat aboard Lauren Landers Sailing, did fall overboard occasionally early on, usually because something on deck had shifted and he jumped somewhere he thought was safe but was not. He has not fallen overboard since a filmed incident in Grenada about a year prior. To handle the risk, there is a rope ladder mounted on the boat that Mo has been trained to climb. For litter, a mix of store-bought litter and sand works well in an outdoor litter box, which keeps smell and mess outside and stays dry under a solar panel above it. A harness is used selectively: for short moves of around 8 miles, no harness is needed, but for overnight passages or more intense conditions, the harness helps track his location. The harness is not about preventing him from jumping overboard intentionally. As she explains, he hates the water and he knows it.
