Choosing a departure day when every option includes squalls

By Lauren Landers Sailing

When planning a passage heading eastward into the wind with squalls forecast on multiple days, Lauren's decision framework came down to which day offered the better wind angle rather than trying to find a squall-free window, since she expected squalls regardless. The priority was to make progress toward the destination as efficiently as possible. She also considered routing on the south side of the island to get a tiny bit of wind shadow from the northerly component of the breeze, hoping to trade wind chop for longer oceanic swell, which she found easier to sail through. The underlying philosophy was to keep moving and make the best call available, not to wait for ideal conditions that were unlikely to materialise.
