Checking into Hiva Oa: the online form makes clearing in take 2 minutes

By Lauren Landers Sailing

Lauren pulled anchor at around 7:00 a.m. and motored roughly nine miles to Hiva Oa to check in, timing the arrival for a Monday when offices would be open. Most services in the Marquesas are only available in the mornings, and it is about a 45-minute walk into town. She needed to clear in with officials, visit the ATM, go to the grocery store, pay taxes at the town hall, and find lunch at a burger spot she had heard about. The actual clearance process was extremely quick as long as the online form is completed before arrival, taking a maximum of two minutes. The ATM, however, was a separate problem: she had accidentally brought her old debit card instead of her new one, so she could not withdraw money.
