A loose collar at the masthead blocked in-mast furling from working
When the in-mast furling system stopped allowing the mainsail to be deployed, the culprit turned out to be a collar-type fitting that had slipped down inside the mast. This collar sits around the furler at the top of the mast, and once it dropped out of position it prevented the whole assembly from functioning correctly. The fix required someone to go up the mast, identify the displaced part, and reseat it so the foil guide assembly could rotate freely again. Lauren Landers Sailing notes that after 28 days of non-stop passage-making, components working loose like this is simply something that happens on a long offshore voyage.
