Why 'just add AI' is naïve: the real complexity inside acquired companies
People hear the pitch — buy a company, add AI, profit — and immediately sense something is missing. That instinct is correct. The reality is that applying AI to an existing business is far more complex than it sounds. A company that has itself acquired eight other businesses now operates across five different regions — São Paulo, Bangalore, Sydney, Toronto, Chicago — and runs 23 different systems of record. Chicago uses SAP, Salesforce, and Workday. Toronto uses NetSuite, HubSpot, and ADP. Every region operates differently. If you try to apply AI across that entire sprawling organization all at once, you will only succeed in accelerating the chaos.
