What is an AGENTS.md file and why does it matter for AI agents?

By Greg Isenberg

An AGENTS.md file is a system prompt that gets injected into the agent chat every time you communicate with an agent. So every single time you send a message, the AGENTS.md file is sent before it. What's powerful about this file is you can dictate exactly how you want the agent to act — its workflow, its behavior, its constraints. Most people's AGENTS.md files are useless because they fill them with information about what the code looks like, which is stuff the agent can already figure out from the codebase itself. The real value of the file is encoding workflows and behaviors that are *not* native to the agent — things it wouldn't know to do on its own.
