Using AI agents doesn't make you less technical — it makes you more technical

By Greg Isenberg

Many people assumed that AI coding tools would make technical knowledge irrelevant. What's actually happening is the opposite: the better you become at managing agents, the more technical you become. A good analogy is that you're essentially an engineering manager — and to be a good manager of many agents, you do need to become technical. You have to understand what Postgres is, you have to understand the difference between a production environment and a dev environment, you have to understand migrations. But the truth is you'll learn all of that by using agents. The practice of directing, reviewing, and correcting agent work forces you to develop a deeper understanding of software than you might ever have gained writing code manually.
