The 'food truck version' heuristic: how to start offline businesses cheaply
The main challenge with offline businesses is the upfront cost, especially in high-rent cities like Manhattan or Toronto. Greg Isenberg's mental model for tackling this is to ask: what is the food truck version of this business? Just as aspiring restaurateurs often launch a food truck first to prove out the concept at a fraction of the cost, any offline business has a lower-cost MVP equivalent worth finding. Othership is a perfect illustration — the founder literally built the first version in his own backyard, invited friends and community members, validated demand, and only then secured a real location. Take it one step at a time.
