An FDE's job has three parts: auditing, eval suites, and deployment
When you're actually building an AI agent for a client, your role as a Fractional/Field Deployment Engineer breaks into three distinct phases. First, auditing — thoroughly understanding the existing workflow. Second, creating evaluation suites to make sure the system behaves correctly; this is extremely important in the AI age and cannot be skipped. Third, deployment — which has two sides: hand-holding the client to ensure they're adopting the system and it's working well for them, and the software side, making sure nothing breaks. You're monitoring KPIs, SLAs, and every metric that matters. Everything needs to be top-notch for someone to genuinely trust you. And critically, every stage is a prerequisite for the next.
