A point of view is the real moat in SaaS — not the features

By Greg Isenberg

When people say there's no moat in SaaS, the real issue is they don't have a point of view. If a competitor wants to copy a product that's built on a distinct methodology, they have to constantly look back at the original creator and ask, 'Wait, what does that actually mean? What's the point of this?' They're always one step, two steps, ten steps behind because they're copying someone who's still doing the thinking. As soon as a competitor builds a feature, they have to stop and go back to the source to understand what it even means in context. That's the moat — not the code, not the UI, but the underlying point of view that drives every decision. There's a ton of moat in SaaS, product, writing, and marketing if you have a point of view. There's no moat in anything if you don't.
